2/2/21 Community Update
February 2, 2021
Dear Hatboro-Horsham Families:
Important Transportation Announcement:
Due to the inability to functionally operate our transportation department, the Hatboro-Horsham School District will not be providing school bus or van services over the next three days: Wednesday, February 3rd through Friday, February 5th. Unfortunately, the transportation department was significantly affected by a COVID-19 outbreak. Between the number of confirmed and/or probable positive cases and mandatory quarantining, over 20 staff members, roughly 25% of our transportation staff, are affected and out of work. Contact tracing suggests that transmission has occurred on-site. Closing the bus garage and ceasing operations for the remainder of the week will allow time to thoroughly clean all facilities and vehicles, while assessing the extent of transmission.
Buildings will remain open for those students scheduled for in-person instruction, however, families must transport their children to and from school.
Over the weekend, the situation will be reassessed. While we hope to be cleared to resume transportation services on Monday, February 8th, it is highly likely that these operations will be impacted next week as well. Given the number and duration of quarantined staff, we anticipate being understaffed. We will continue to provide updates, but students and families should expect delays, adjusted routes, and perhaps specific route cancellations. We know this is problematic for families and while this is an added inconvenience, we need to take proactive and precautionary measures to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
While this outbreak is not weather-related, the current road conditions unquestionably exacerbate this situation. With schools being open for those who are scheduled to attend, this could mean more drivers on the road at a time when conditions are not optimal. Please be safe while transporting children to school. Schools will be flexible with potentially delayed arrival at school, as well as with students who cannot attend in-person, ensuring they can connect remotely.
Please plan for schools to start at the regularly scheduled time tomorrow, Wednesday, February 3, 2021. If weather or road conditions worsen and necessitate a change, evening or early-morning communication will be sent.
Future Weather-Emergency Days
With the snow day on February 2, 2021, we have exhausted the weather emergency days that have been built into the school calendar. Future “snow days” will result in transition to virtual instruction. Communication about these events will follow our typical weather announcement procedure.
Meal distribution will occur at Keith Valley Middle School on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 from 4:00-6:00 pm.
Reset of COVID-19 Dashboard
In consultation with the Montgomery County Office of Public Health, we have used the extended closure of our buildings due to the weather emergency to enact cleaning protocols that allow us to use these days to “reset” our building COVID-19 case counts. The COVID-19 dashboard will reflect this change today. This may help us avoid COVID-19 related closures in some of our buildings in the days ahead.
